Golden chance: Jewellers to slash prices on Akshay Tritiya

With gold prices shooting to unprecedented highs, buying gold jewellery in recent weeks had become slightly difficult for most of us. However, you can now think of making that trip to your nearest jewellery store as several prominent dealers have announced discounts on sale of jewellery on Akshay Tritiya.

India’s largest branded jewellery company Tanishq has said it will sell diamond jewellery for 15% less, and will offer up to 25% off on making charges of plain gold jewellery.

PC Jewellers, too, has decided to woo customers by offering them free gifts on purchase of gold. The company will give one gram of gold for free on purchase of gold worth Rs 80,000 or diamonds worth Rs 50,000. Also, you can get ½ gram of gold for free if you buy gold worth Rs 40,000 or diamond worth Rs 25,000.

Meanwhile, Reliance Jewels has announced its ‘Akshaya Tritiya pre-booking offer’. Under the scheme, the company will offer ‘Double Gold Rate Protection’ to customers who can pre-book jewellery for Akshay Tritiya and fix their gold rate to protect against price increase. Further, if the gold rate on Akshay Tritiya (May 6) is lower than the booking rate the customer can get the difference back.

Big Bazaar has announced a discount of Rs 100 on 10 grams of gold. Mumbai-based Gitanjali Jewellers will sell jewellery at a flat discount of 50% on Akshay Tritiya. Also, it will sell diamond jewellery at a discount of 30%.

However, prominent Delhi-based gold jeweller Pawan Gupta dismisses these offers as mere marketing gimmicks. He believes it is not possible for anyone to sell gold at discounted rates because of the already slim margins that characterise the jewellery business.
